History of Our Church
There is a record of Methodism at work in Aiken as far back as 1825.

The St. John's Committee on Archives and History has spent hundreds of hours compiling the history of this great church. A few of the details are provided here. More extensive information is available in the Archives and History Room at the church.

There is a record of Methodism at work in Aiken as far back as 1825.

Rev. John R. Pickett was a Methodist Circuit Rider who in 1853 served what was to become St. John's Methodist Church in a small chapel in downtown Aiken.

In October, 1857, work was begun on a larger facility.

There is a record of an active Sunday School in 1883.

The first parsonage was constructed sometime between 1896 and 1899.

In 1933 the ladies of the church made cushions for the pews.

Membership was 367 in 1938-39.

In 1946 an electric organ replaced the old piano.

Boy Scout Troop #121 was organized in 1952, and is still sponsored by the church.

A new building known as "The Educational Building and Fellowship Hall" was consecrated in 1956.

Planning for a new sanctuary and chapel was begun in the early 1960s.

The Altar Guild was formed in 1964.

The first Pictorial Directory was issued in 1974.

Jumping forward in time, the Ebenezer Center was constructed beginning in the late 1990s. This large facility houses a modern multi-purpose gym, classrooms, and a kitchen, along with support facilities, a playground, and expanded parking.

As we enter the 21st century, St. John's looks forward to a continuing record of service to its membership and to the community.
